Chicago inspector general: police reform hindered by key departures

In this audio piece, we hear testimony by Chicago Inspector General (IG) Joseph Ferguson from a Nov. 2, 2020 hearing of the City Council's Committee on Budget & Government Operations. At the hearing, Ferguson sounded warnings about the pace of reform of the Chicago Police Department (CPD).

In the standard version of the episode, Ferguson explained the turnover in the position of Deputy IG for Public Safety, in response to a question by 36th Ward Ald. Gilbert Villegas.

In the premium version of the episode, Ferguson spoke of the "fiscal consequences" of departures by the other key players in Chicago police reform—and why their exit will impede the federal consent decree and stymie transformation of CPD.

Also the premium version, Ferguson faulted the city's embattled law department for its tendency to withhold information from other city officials.

Additionally, the premium version features comments by Ald. Ald. Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez (33) and Ald. Harry Osterman (48).

IG Ferguson's remarks were edited for brevity.

Length 2.8 minutes standard, 10.8 minutes premium.
